ShineBright0207 Posted February 7, 2018 Report Posted February 7, 2018 Hello everyone, I am currently working as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Ontario for two years. I have always wanted to be a doctor and I believe that my passion lies in this profession. I do enjoy nursing, but I have always wanted to do more (i.e. expand my scope of practice). I have been thinking of pursuing this dream, but I am currently stuck. I have been reviewing for MCAT on my own, but I am weak in math and physics. I currently volunteer for a non- profit organization, but I do feel that it is not enough for the non-academic requirements. Any advice or tips on how to proceed with this? Where have you guys volunteered? How did you study for the MCAT? Anything would help. Thank you!
goleafsgochris Posted February 7, 2018 Report Posted February 7, 2018 There were a few nurses to MDs in my class. ECs are usually not too hard: if you volunteer for a non profit, plus work as a nurse, plus do SOME ECs (play on a sports team, take a pottery class, whatever), that's usually enough. I was on admission comittees and found that by and large people overestimate how much ECs they need. The issue can be the GPA...you get no "bonus" for doing an RN and grades are usually lower. Look at the interview invite threads, you probably need a 3.8GPA to be competitive. Good luck!
ShineBright0207 Posted February 7, 2018 Author Report Posted February 7, 2018 My GPA is only around 3.5. How do I increase my GPA? Would I need to take courses? What courses would you recommend? Thank you very much!
