nosm_d
Hey guys, Did anyone write the CARS section of the MCAT only? If so, did you receive an interview at McMaster? I realize that it would be in my best interest to complete the entire MCAT and do my best on each section. Of course, this will open many more doors for me... I am just curious. Thanks! brady23
Yeah - you could go all out for CARS, but if you can do well in CARS, why eliminate yourself from other schools? You have nothing to lose by writing the science sections also. However, I have heard of people doing this (as crazy as it sounds).

Ha there are so many applicants and so many combinations if there is a why to get in somewhere someone has done it at some point If you ever take the mcat and have a bunch of people just walk out way too early that is probably what they are doing. Even way back when I wrote the test last some with our group did that. of course it is rare as it a rather extreme and highly risky strategy. I am only speculating... but I feel confident in saying that my physics/math section will be my weakest score. Have you come across people who got into.. say, Queens, despite having 1 poorly completed section on the exam? Is it an all or nothing sort of deal, or do you think i'll have a shot even if my physics score is horrible?

Queens is that annoying black box - they do seem to have cut offs for each section which we try to derive each year based on the interview and acceptance stats. So I would say "horrible" is not ideal, but you don't need perfection in each section. Take a look at the Queens acceptance threads to help narrow it down - ha, that is actually one of the major points of the forum is to help guide expectations. Also I mean no section of the MCAT is easy but fortunately the physics section is relatively narrow in scope. Most people have a section that is a pain in the ass for them - that is completely normal on such a broad based exam. You may be able to surprise yourself (particularly since it is designed to make the math easier).
brady23
Also, Physical Sciences is very broad on the MCAT, but you also don't need to do super well (A 127 is definitely ideal, but a 126 shouldn't hurt)

But given how competitive med is, I don't think anyone is confident (foolish?) enough to limit the schools they can potentially get accepted to by only writing/trying on 1 section of the test. Although, I could be wrong... You are wrong, I know plenty of fools who did that.

jr2
If ur not ever applying to the us and u want to give McMaster a quick shot next year, I would say go for it! The only pitfall is that the exam is expensive, so if u choose to rewrite next year for different schools, it will be costly. Dont forget uoft only requires 125 in each section...that is a pretty reasonable bar, even in the sciences for non trad students. Maybe gun for cars and try to hit the min 125 in other sections to open uoft.
rmorelan
only real drawback other than cost is that there are limits to the number of times you can write the test, and some US schools look down on too many repeats.
