Agee
I'm in a sort of a pickle. I'm a Canadian in the U.S. about to match in family medicine and my goal is to come home to Canada. Right now I'm in both CaRMS and ERAS (the US match), which is good considering if I match in CaRMS 1st iteration then I'll be pulled from ERAS automatically...but if I don't make the 1st iteration then I will continue to ERAS where I know I'll match for sure (my institution knows me well) at a very good program for 3 years, and so I'll miss out on the CaRMS 2nd iteration. The deadline to pull out of ERAS is Feb 21 which means I'll need to decide before any CaRMS results are even available... I ranked U of T, Western, Memorial, Alberta and McGill Options: a- Stay in both CaRMS and ERAS and risk not matching in CaRMS 1st iteration, and then surely matching in the US for 3 years b- Drop the US match for a chance at CaRMS 2nd iteration if I should need it
Intrepid86
Stay in both. This isn't a pickle at all. It's easy. Your first option guarantees something. Your second option guarantees nothing.
indefatigable
Yes - stay in both. Not too many CaRMs spots in the 2nd iteration these days, even in FM. Western usually has some, but you've already applied there for 1st round positions. The risk of withdrawing and then not matching for whatever reason is higher to me than the downside of matching to a 3 year US program.
JohnGrisham
Do not under any circumstances drop your US match prospects for Round 2 CaRMS. Arguably you'll probably get more diverse FM training in the US anyways, and be more well equipped to pick up hospitalist work here in Canada when your back too. if you have flexibility in your programs 3rd year, you may even be able to do a makeshift niche area. It is easy to come back to Canada as a US trained family physician. The leftover spots in 2nd round are not plentiful and the ones that get left over are mainly in Quebec and you are going to be competing against a whole plethora of unmatched CMGs (who are still going to be given some preference under the table most likely) and tons of unmatched IMGs.
