Overhead

Do specialties like GIM, anesthesiologists and surgeons pay overhead? What about outpatient specialties like endocrine or inpatient specialties like respirology?

I know family medicine has about 30% overhead, while Dermatology and Ophthalmology might be higher at around 35-40%.

I couldn't find any resources on this which is why I'm curious if anyone knows.

Some so, some dont

Hospital based GIMs and hospitalist GPs, ER docs, anesthesia, ICU all do not. Surgeons have clinics they pay for, same with cardiologists and GI etc.

That is all dependent on where you work.  Typically, you can make more money in a clinic as a GP/FM regardless of overhead.  My partner is an ER Physician who used to be a GP/FM at his own clinic. He made more money in the clinic then he does in ER. However, he enjoys the lifestyle working in the hospital and the activities with his peers the hospital offers he didn't get working in a clinic with two other GP/FM.

From my understanding, 30 to 35 is an expected norm.  I've heard some quotes now and then at 20% , but I wonder if they are older arrangements because salaries/wages  for employees are higher - which would be an added expense to the overhead. Not to mention leasing and property rates are horrifyingly high too! The really low rates could be singularly for a physician who owns the clinic and charges his peers more then he pays.  I can't imagine at 20 / 25 a clinic would operate that efficiently now a days.

Anyone else know if 20/25 is still even an offer anymore? What kind of an environment/location?
