HELP!! Flight issues

Recommended Posts

My interview is this Friday and I'm supposed to leave Thursday. But, as many people know, we get a buttload of snow in NB ... And, it turns out that we're getting our 4th big snow storm in a two week span this Thursday, which means there's a big chance that my flight will be cancelled :'( I can't go any sooner than Thursday and most of the flights on Friday morning won't get me there in time. Is there any way that my interview date or even hour (later in the day on Friday) can be changed?! I emailed Chantal but she has not answered yet. I'M FREAKING OUT!!!!!

You can call Chantal as well but she is probably not there anymore. I would try her tomorrow maybe. Sorry to hear about your flight problems- not sure what the med school will do in your situation, except to say that they're pretty reasonable and know that you can't control the weather! :(

Today was an interesting day to say the least. Our flight was cancelled yesterday so we got booked this morning at 5h10 .. woke up at 3h30 and got to the airport. Flight was delayed 2h so we missed our connection flight in Toronto. We got scheduled for a 10h10 flight but it would have gotten us there literally last minute (by the time we got to the rotel) so we asked for the 9h10. We literally had to sprint from one side of the airport to the other because they had already closed the gate. Thankfully we made it and turns out we got the last two seats on the plane (silver lining, they were first class seats lol). I still hadn't eaten anything at this point so the breakfast that was offered was an awesome surprise!! We finally got to the rotel at 11h and we had to be there at 12h. Now we're sitting in the airport waiting to board in 10 minutes to fly back home. So overall pretty shitty day haha

I know this whole situation definitely affected my performance but I don't think it can be taken into consideration right?! :(

What an ordeal... I’m sorry you had to go through that. Traveling can indeed be very stressful. :/

I think it’s important to keep in mind that it may not have affected your performance as much as you think it did. I’m not sure whether they’d be able to factor it in, but I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to call or email Chantal to ask her.

Hey @Maggie19 . Sorry to hear things turned out the way they did. Firstly, us interviewees are not that good at gauging our performance and so you might have done much better than you think.  Secondly, from my past experiences,  sometimes when we are in that fight or flight (no pun intended) situation, we actually perform better without even knowing. Lastly, I personally do not think it is very professional to call the admissions office and talk about events leading to the interview. Nobody knows what other candidates had gone through right before their interviews( getting bad news, arguing with family/friends, job-related issues,  basically anything external). But of course, the choice is yours.

Late response to this but I agree with @GITG's viewpoint. I'm really sorry you went through all of that and I can only imagine how much it affected your mindset walking into your interview, but I do not think it would be a good idea to call about it

I didn't message Chantal in the end. I read what @GITG said and it made so much sense ; I was so preoccupied with my situation that I wasn't thinking clearly. I really think it would have been a mistake and I would regretted doing it. So thank you for that :)

It was a good choice not to call and talk about this. Well said GITG. Everyone has their own sets of issues and hurdles to go through. Yours was quite the experience! But def not appropriate to call and discuss it. How would the admissions committee even factor that in? It wouldnt make sense.

yeah that is the problem - there is simply no way to actually use that information.

I will reinforce what someone above said as well - people well and truly suck at evaluating themselves during the interview. We just are too busy being interviewed to also self reflect.

Haha, I felt my interview went well, so when I read this, I get nervous!

Travelling to interviews definitely adds a whole extra layer of stress to things.

To commiserate, I travelled from BC to Manitoba (landed at midnight) for an interview this year and the airline lost my luggage. Needless to say, I was super glad I has a little extra money and a few morning hours before my interview to go shopping for a decent outfit. Definitely wore my winter boots to the interview, and got to talk about my response to stressful situations in the interview, highlighting my lost luggage as a recent very stressful event that I had the opportunity to work through. And now its at least a good story - and hopefully I didn't blow my interview!

We do our best with what we are given. I'm really proud of myself for keeping myself together, and I think you should be proud too. And, its gotta be good practice for CaRMS interviews in the future, right? :)
