Any advice appreciated!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

GPA: 3.8, 3.82, 3.93, 3.37

last year tanked due to frequent hospital visits.

MCAT: 511 balanced with 127 in CARS

ECs: a bit below average... 1 year research with no pubs, some administrative and seminar presentation for 3 years, and 200ish hours of clinical volunteering

Im IP in alberta and currently graduated. Im working on my ECs while I wait to apply. So my question was which Canadian schools do I have a shot at? Also, should I retake the MCAT? I am a bit hesitant because what if I score lower?

Hi there,

I'd say IP schools are where you have the biggest advantage at so definitely apply to UAlberta and UCalgary. I'm not overly familiar with the selection process of either of these schools so I can't comment much about your competitiveness there.
For Ontario schools, you'd have a higher chance of getting an invite if your cGPA/ wGPA  is approximately 3.85+.  Many schools have special weighting formulas, such as UWO looking at best two years and UofT dropping 8 of your lowest courses if you've taken 5 courses/ semester, so do look into that and recalculate your GPA. Otherwise, your ECs could use a boost which you've noted.  As for your MCAT score, it should be fine for most Ontario schools  with the exception of Western since they seek for those with 129+ on CARS in your case and with McMaster, you'd need to do well on Casper (but keep in mind McMaster only accepts 10% OOP).

Best of luck!
