CAPS UBC: some questions

Recommended Posts

I really have my heart set on this program (it seems really interesting and relevant to my future goal of going to med school) but of course I want to be realistic. I'm just wondering how competitive this program is to get into? Do they have a set number of seats every year and if so how many? Are the minimum requirements typically strictly adhered to?

Thanks!

3 years ago it was 80-85% avg cutoff to get in think.. not sure  if that guarantees acceptance though. i think there are 25ish people who get in each year. however they are in the midst of revamping the entire program right now which includes possibly adding a majors stream in addition to the honours stream (not sure if the new program will start this sept or not). sorry that was kinda vague but its the best i have :)

Yeah, the program is in the process of being revamped but i can basically guarantee there won't be changes made in time for this september.

As for your questions, meet with the program advisor! She is fantastic and will be able to give you a realistic assesment. In terms of requirements, it depends how far off you are from meeting them. With me, I didn't really wanna take an extra course to meet the 33 credit requirement we had for 2nd year but I was already at 32 credits so it was ok

Wow thanks so much for your replies! And I'll definitely contact the advisor (was a bit nervous to do so before).

Also, do you know if people mostly enter in their second year or are there students who transfer in third?

No worries, feel free to PM me if you wanna chat more! Honestly, entering in second year doesn't mean anything since you're still taking pre-reqs for the program and aren't "in" as yet. I also know a bunch do microbio/biochem etc. in 2nd year and so long as you still took the caps prereqs during second year you'll be fine to enter in 3rd year since everyone basically (re)applies in 2nd year as you have to meet with the advisor and submit a paper form to her.
