Applying to the US.. need some advice

Recommended Posts

I have a general question regarding the application process. Anyone else out there feel like the us schools can be very random and unpredictable. Given a strong application otherwise, were you guys able to predict where you would get interviews based on your stats?

In addition, It seems that the undergrad you went to really does matter. Are there any deans out there that are familiar with canadian schools?

I know this may be a little off topic- with a great MCAT score and a 3.61 from UofT from its nearly most difficult specialist life sciences programme and very good extra-curriculars , which schools should I look into?

(I just finished my 3rd year and this gpa is the first 3 years).

Get the MSAR book. It will give you a very detailed look at how competitive each school is, and which ones accept international students.

As far as tuition, the paying everything upfront is for immigration purposes. In order for the school to issue a student visa, you must be able to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself for the entire 4 years. If you are applying to the US, then you MUST prepare yourself for this. If you have parents that are willing to help out then obtaining a loan for med school won't be too difficult.

As a rule of thumb, if you have a GPA > 3.5 and MCAT > 30, you are in decent shape. The higher they are, the better chances you have. It doesn't really matter what program you took or at what university you went to. Extra-curriculars are HUGE! Good ECs can make up for lower scores.

It is a good idea to look at the MSAR and see how many international students they have admitted recently. If it says zero, then consider whether spending your time and money on that school is worth it. However, just because a school didn't admit an international student the previous year, doesn't mean that you can't get in this year. (SLU didn't accept any internationals for the class of 2011, but they took 4 for the class of 2010, and at least 1 for the class of 2009 and 2012.)
