American citizenship

Now, generally speaking, I know you have to be in the USA for seven years to apply for citizenship. If one was to do their MD in the USA, and then their residency, could they apply to be citizens after three years in residency? Or are there Visa restrictions?

Basically, I'm wondering how I would go about becoming an American citizen.

all I know is that an H1B visa can be transitioned into a greencard unlike its J1 counterpart, which is part of the reason why it's so coveted.
