thami
Has anyone here written the MCAT as well as the GRE? I am entertaining the idea of possibly writing both this next summer. I am thinking the GRE prep might help alleviate the MCAT's VR and writing sections. Thoughts?
Jamer
GRE VR is similar to MCAT but they give you like, double the time. If anything, preparing for VR will help you more on the GRE
switcheroo
I would say don't bother with the GRE unless you actually need it for something. My experience was that the verbal section of the GRE was quite different from the MCAT VR section--the reason being that the GRE mainly just wants to know how many word definitions you can cram into your head, while the MCAT wants to know how well you can derive information from what you're reading (more like reading comp. on the DAT). Anyway, I found I was much better prepared for the MCAT VR section not by my GRE experiences, but just by having taken hard courses in university. So, my advice would be to use any very quick-paced, difficult course you might be in as an opportunity to become adept at quickly extracting pertinent information from what you're reading. I didn't prepare for the VR section at all and I got an 11--not stellar, but not too shabby either.
thami
Thanks for the replies! Did you take both exams within a short time frame of each other? I don't know if I should take the GRE - it's a must for graduate school but I haven't decided on it completely yet.
