musicaldna Posted July 30, 2009 Report Share Posted July 30, 2009 I just had a comment regarding the ECs that American undergrads usually have... Some of them sound very cool. Like phlebotomy tech. Almost all of them are part of those Latin fraternities and have shadowing experiences. Too bad we don't have such things here. It almost sounds like there is a pre-determined plan to getting the ECs over there. I notice quite a difference between the ECs of Canadians and Americans. This is okay though right? c17h Posted July 31, 2009 Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 Keep in mind that the admissions committee is looking for diversity...it may be a good thing that we don't have the same ECs as US students...this way we can bring up something unique that the adcoms haven't already heard 1000 times. I have my ECs and I am proud about those. I am just saying that it would be cool to have some of the more in-depth clinical experience that is possible in US. Shadowing is a common practice there and people shadow all sorts of specialists and surgeons. We can do it here too but it just takes more time and effort to convince doctors to let you follow them. I haven't even started second year and I've already closed small chemo port and lap wounds solo in the OR (the attending took a look after I was done, of course).
