magiman
I know in Canada they do not stress the need for clinical experience (ie/ hospital work or working beside a doctor) but from my undersatnding its alot more important in the US... that true? Rach
Yes they definitely look for clinical experience. There is even a section for those experiences in the application. It wouldn't look good to leave that blank imho.

wrighm6
When did schools in Canada not stress the need for clinical experience? I think everyone looks at is as a plus. But yes, I think it's very important in the US, especially to be competitive as a Canadian applicant.
Quester
Isn't it really hard to gain this experience here, especially if you don't have any connections? I mean, where would you start?

You could volunteer at a hospital, requires no connections.
Quester
You could volunteer at a hospital, requires no connections. Well now...would you say "clinical experience" means just any experience that involves close proximity to patients, or actually working closely with doctors? Because wouldn't the latter experience be more challenging to acquire?

You don't necessarily need to work with doctors, but if you can get a better idea of what the profession involves, that's a bonus.
magiman
well i am working with this doctor... but i dunno if i should continue.. i am doing alot of paperwork and billing.. essentially doing his secretarial work (volunteer) and not really getting to see patients.. hes asking for huge committments like 20hrs a week and i am thinking that this would be best served elsewhere.. i haven't got to see patients and stuff

Quester
As LizzyM says, if you can smell a patient it is clinical experience. Well, I'm glad this has been clarified now. LoL
