Calgary CARMS results

Recommended Posts

The complete CARMS statistics came out...

Looking at unmatched positions, U of C had the highest percentage of unmatched students of any school (9.5%)... Is anyone else concerned about this? Is it factoring into anyone's decision of which school to attend?

I read Dr. Walker's posts about it but I am still REALLY wondering what happened, it isn't because it is 3 years because Mac did just fine.

I have faith in Dr. Walker and the U of C faculty. The fact that they already recognize this as a problem is a step in the right direction. The fact that we will do Carms in 3 years gives them ample time to find a solution to this.

Therefore this match result, which is not part of a consistent trend, does not worry me

I found this comparison between 2010 and 2011 very interesting - in general, although they tell us that a very high number of people match to their first choice discipline, a lot of schools have 50-60% of grads matching to first choice overall

Anyone notice that Calgary is at the bottom for 1st choice matches for 2010 and 2011? Perhaps the unmatched issue this year is an anomaly, but has UofC consistently ranked at the bottom for 1st choice matches too? Not sure how to find prior year stats...

I haven't combed through the documents but I think ppl usually tell you that 95% of people match to their first choice of specialty (which is true) but they usually don't mention that only 50-60% of ppl match to their first choice of program (specialty and location)

A high number of people (pretty much every school sitting between 88-95%) do match to their first choice DISCIPLINE.

But it doesn't necessarily mean they match to their number one RANKED spot.

Your ranking includes location + discipline.

So If you want IM in Calgary and rank that number one.. And Rank IM Edmonton number 3, and subsequently end up in Edmonton you still matched to your number one discipline, but not your number one rank.

Thats where the 50-60% stat comes from.

Thanks for the clarification on that; looks a lot better. Though the 90% doesn't include unmatched right? So for UofC the true discipline match should be closer to 76% in 2011...

I guess if discipline matching is close to on par, the question becomes: why do UofC grads not get their preferred location with the same success as other schools?

Had to create an account to end this speculation.

CARMS matching is like getting a job - bottom line is that the people who rank you have to like you and want you on their team. In the end, it doesn't really matter where you come from or what school you went to. Obviously, the bare necessities need to be there (i.e. pass all exams, perform at a satisfactory level in clerkship, and setup the appropriate electives), but it really just boils down to whether or not you're a likeable person who people can see as a future colleague.

And, like any other industry in the world, networking plays a huge factor. It always helps to know people.

U of C had a hiccup this year - things would be more concerning if this was a consistent trend. CARMS matching is all about the individual, not the school.

Peace.

I'm not sure that home schools prefer their local graduates per se. I agree that you may find a large number of local grads in a program, but that is likely a combination of those local graduates having more opportunities to become well known to the program, and competitive candidates choosing to stay where they already have roots. If the local graduate is not liked or not considered strong by the program, they will not match, and I've seen this many times.
