chocolate_chip
Hi everyone, This forum is amazing I've acquired more info on here from everyone's posts than mac website or admin. So here's my situation: I am a non-canadian with undergrad in psych from a noncanadian uni. My fiancee is canadian which means I'll be moving around may/june. (I know, wrong section, but there were no replies in that section -really desperate). I wanted to know: will they even look at my app considering I'm international? Ill be a permanent resident but I don't think by time apps are due.also, do I have to take any classes there or is my uni degree sufficient since that's what is required from canadian students. Any replies will be appreciated. Any info at all, I'm losing hair over this thinking its impossible with the number of applicants vs spots available. Head Squeeze
I think, first of all you would need to get your degree evaluated in Canada..that should show you the way.
HopeToBeGreen
Mac reserves 90% of their interview spots for Ontario residents. Here are the criteria for being an Ontario resident: http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/mdprog/geographical_status.html It doesn't look to me as though you would qualify as on Ontario resident so you'd be trying to land one of the out of province spots. Obviously the competition will be more intense for these spots but if your application is reasonably strong I don't see why you shouldn't try. Your non-Canadian degree should qualify you for consideration but you need to get it evaluated. Here is the info on how to do that: http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/mdprog/credentialling_grades.html
Retractable
Also I don't know what you would qualify as, but non-Canadian residents have a different tuition (approx 100k/yr). As you wouldn't qualify for Ontario resident as posted above, you would need to make sure which tuition you will be paying. I'm sure that will make a large impact. medbat
My post was 100% correct. See below posts for accurate information. Sorry =(.
HopeToBeGreen
If NOT Canadian citizen or PR by 10/3/11 --> cannot apply; no int'l applicants accepted this round. I don't think this is correct. According to this link: http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/mdprog/international_applicants.html "All non-Canadians who are interested in applying to McMaster's Medical Program can apply through the regular stream, via the Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS)" My assumption is that all such applicants would be considered part of the out of province pool. HopeToBeGreen
Further to my last post... The OMSAS manual for this year (which is the definitive source for the information says Ninety percent of interview positions will be given to those whose place of residence is (1) the province of Ontario, and 10 percent of interview positions will be given to those whose place of residence is (2) outside Ontario. To qualify for (1) above, an applicant must: a. be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident by October 3, 2011; and b. have resided in Ontario for at least three years, since the age of 14, by the date of possible entry to the program. Any other applicant qualifies for (2). There is no mention of a requirement to be either a citizen or a landed immigrant.
lazyboy
You should take a look at this http://www.afmc.ca/pdf/2011AdBk.pdf There are couple of things that I like to highlight 1/ 2010/11 First-Year Tuition: $20,831 for Canadian residents; $108,546 for visa students; other compulsory fees were $737 2/ Interviews: These take place in March and April, 2011. For the September, 2010 entering class there were 477 Ontario residents interviewed, 48 other residents of Canada interviewed and 1 resident outside of Canada interviewed for a total of 526 applicants interviewed. Clearly, McMaster does accept foreign student @ 108K for first year. However, there is only 1 foreginer that gain interview. IMHO, I think you should gain your PR status, get your transcript evaulated, take MCAT and go from there. Mind you, the competition is pretty intense for Canadian already. lazyboy
Here is the one for 2012 http://www.afmc.ca/pdf/2012_ad_bk.pdf 1/ $22,497 for Canadian residents; $95.000 for visa students; other compulsory fees were $842 2/ These take place in March and April, 2012. For the September, 2011 entering class there were 495 Ontario residents interviewed, 50 other residents of Canada interviewed and 2 residents outside of Canada interviewed for a total of 547 applicants interviewed. 3/ Canadian citizens/permanent residents or visa students may apply. so tuition fee for visa student is lower
future_doc
Sounds like your best approach is to wait until you are permanent resident.
