Kaplan’s free practice tests are a great way for any grad school hopeful to experience the test without the pressure of an official score. The more formal practice you get in attacking the types of questions on the MCAT, following directions and procedures, and working under strict time constraints, the better prepared you’ll be for the real thing. Work out your mistakes and kinks now—that’s part of what Practice Test is all about. Kaplan knows this, because we’ve been preparing people for the real thing longer than anyone else. 46 years, in fact.

Most students I speak with are surprised by the MCAT the first time they see it, because it’s very different from any of the science exams you’ve encountered in your undergraduate career. On collegiate science tests you’re typically asked to cram a bunch of information into your brain, and then regurgitate it on the exam. But that won’t work for the MCAT. Here’s a secret: the MCAT is not really a science test. At its heart, the MCAT is actually a Critical Thinking test – that is, it’s designed to test your ability to understand and to reason, in addition to your basic knowledge of the core sciences. Kaplan MCAT courses include unlimited access to the 8 AAMC exams, which do include actual questions from test day and Kaplan Practice Tests have been carefully built to mimic the actual MCAT in both difficulty and scope

Imagine you had a question like this on Test Day: 64 teams compete in a tournament. 2 teams play in each game, and teams that lose are immediately eliminated from the tournament. What is the minimum number of games that must be played in order to have only one undefeated team?

32 vs. 32 = 32 games

16 vs. 16 = 16 games

8 vs. 8 = 8 games

4 vs. 4 = 4 games

2 vs. 2 = 2 games

1 vs. 1= 1 game

Total = 63 games

Did you get the answer? How did you do it? Did you add up all the games? Excellent! You are correct. That was the math way and you can do it within the minute time. But one of the aspects of Critical Thinking is doing it faster so you can get more points and spend more time on the more difficult problems.

Here’s another approach—In this question, how many winners do we have in the end? One. How many losers do we have? 63. So --how many games had to be played? 63, right.

That’s it, we’re done. We have the same answer, but we’ve saved time for a harder question AND we didn’t run the risk of making a mathematical mistake! With less than 2 minutes to spend on each question, you’ll need to be strategic in deciding on the best approach to any given problem on test day, and when to invest your time versus saving time. That is why Kaplan’s courses focus not just on the content, but also on the critical thinking strategies you need for a top score

Reasons to Choose Kaplan:

1. Personalized prep: At Kaplan, we prep thousands of students for the MCAT every year – in fact, we get more than twice as many students into medical school than anyone else. But, what we recognize is that no two students are the same. Every student has different goals and ambitions. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Because we’re the largest provider of test prep in the world, we have the resources to offer a range of prep options that are personalized to your unique needs.

No matter which option you choose, you should feel confident that with Kaplan you’re getting everything you need to succeed on the MCAT. In each of our courses we make it a point to go over all of the science that’s on the test – you’ll get a full review of physics, general chemistry, organic chemisty, and biology. In addition though, we also make it a point of teaching you the critical thinking skills and time saving strategies that you’ve gotten a preview of today, and that, as you’ve seen, can save you a lot of trouble on test day!

Finding the right course for you is the first part of having a personalized experience. But your preparation becomes truly customized with use of our exclusive online Adaptive Learning Technology, called Smart Reports. Smart Reports thoroughly analyzes your performance by section and question type and helps you find your areas of greatest opportunity and the relevance of those question types on the MCAT.
