OMGITWONTFI
Hi guys, I was wondering in this day and age what GPA/MCAT one would need to get interviewed and ultimately accepted into Canadian friendly low-mid tier American MD schools, as well as DO schools. The American schools forum has been pretty dead lately, and a lot of the information I found seems to be slightly outdated by a few years. Any supported estimates out there? bpatient
3.5 and 30+ will give you good chances at it, more so for DO than MD low tiers...usually depends on MCAT and other stuff on your app for MD.
Jaybird
How about the mid-high tiers? Also, the impression I get is that MCAT and GPA are combined in an assessment, so that a good MCAT can pull up a bad GPA and vice versa. Is that a correct conclusion to draw? nychila
Md: 3.7, +30 do: 3.5, +27 Canadian applicants do not need a 3.7 to get into US MD, but should definitely be above 3.5.

Flame219
Here's some real hard data for you folks wondering about the GPA and MCAT for the average Canadian applicant and matriculant in a US MD school. According to these tables for 2012-2013: Average applicant GPA: 3.56 Average applicant MCAT total: 30.5Q Average matriculant GPA: 3.74 Average matriculant MCAT total: 33.7Q That should clear up a lot of the rumors and speculation. Here are the tables for MCAT and GPA breakdown from the AAMC website: https://www.aamc.org/download/321500/data/2012factstable20.pdf https://www.aamc.org/download/321502/data/2012factstable21.pdf

StevieRay
I think it will also heavily depend on your EC. I think it's really achievable getting 3.7 and 30+. I will be applying this coming year. Do you think higher academic stats can compensate for EC?
Slashsev
yes i think ECs will be for interviews... but thats my 2 cents
medigeek
American schools are known for taking a more "overall" look at an applicant rather than using strict cut offs like we do in Canada. Your supplementary application will show all of your ECs and they can then distinguish someone who's been successful overall vs. someone only successful in the classroom setting. Hence why schools like Yale have acceptance GPAs of <3.8 (I believe it was 3.76 last year?) and keep in mind a 4.0 = 85% not 90% like with OMSAS. Many other big name schools too barely hit 3.8. Stebu Wilson
Canada: 3.5 and 27+ mcat +/- XX has been the ballpark range American states: much lower if i have a 3.37-3.40 cGPA at McGill... (still have exams) would a good mcat score 35+ make up for this...? my EC is solid but just wondering about grades for now.
Slashsev
these numbers are not set in stone people with lower stats have gotten in and people with higher stats have been rejected it is the luck of the draw you can improve your chances by applying broadly, early, and contacting admission/showing interest with letters your stats are good with +35 mcats will get you MDs too! USA loves mcat like i said broadly and early use the good DO schools as back up if you pull a rabbit outta the hat (+35)
