Applying to American + Canadian schools at the same time

Sorry if the answer to this question is obvious (what a Canadian way to start a thread), but how do you apply to both if your first choice is to remain in Canada? American acceptances come out so early and they require a response, even before Canadian schools start sending out interview invitations.

 

If you get in, do you accept the American offer, pay the (hopefully small) deposit and say goodbye to Canadian med schools? Or do people go to Cdn interviews anyway and withdraw from American schools if they also get in in Canada?

I applied to both. Basically you have to pay your deposits at the American school to hold you place, but (at least at Wayne where I hold one) the deposit is only $50, so if I have to forfeit my place it's not like I'm losing thousands. Then you wait to hear from the Canadian schools and you can decide which option you want to pursue if you get into both.

I believe you also get your deposit back if you withdraw before May 15th, at which point you would know about your Canadian schools (unless you get waitlisted)

Is it also correct you're able to hold multiple spots with deposits before May 15th (at which point you have to choose one)?

Yes, that's right - you can hold places at multiple schools until then, at which point you can only hold one.

 

The deposit being refundable depends on the school.
