TobiasFunke
Hey everyone, Quick question: Is the length of time that writer of your reference letter has known you relevant? The reason I ask is because I really want to ask my summer research supervisor (this current summer) to be one of my references. She's gotten to know me really well but we've only known each other since May. I've heard that you should make sure that your references have known you for at least 1 year... nino
I don't think the length of time matters that much per se. What is more important is your involvement with your research project and how well your supervisor has gotten to know you as a person and what she thinks of you as an aspiring physician. For sure a longer length of time would give your supervisor more opportunities to discover more of your wonderful qualities that are required by med school adcoms, but time alone shouldn't be a determining factor. Ask her if she is comfortable with writing you a strong LOR and make sure she knows what the adcom is look for in a good candidate.
