miyagi01
Hi guys, I wont be applying this cycle but I will the next. Im trying to get a grasp of my chances for applying. I'm a current grad student in a course based masters program. Im going to have my masters in december 2014. My undergraduate GPA is 3.71 (OMSAS) and 3.87 (AMCAS), I went to YorkU. Ive written the MCAt 3 times, getting a 23, 29 (11P, 8V, 10B), and most recently 29 again (9P, 10V, 10B). I also have some decent extracurriculars including volunteering experience, a year of research (with 1 publication already, a few more on the way), a ta-ship, and some other practicum experience. With this in mind, what kind of candidate am I, and where would I have the greatest likelihood of getting accepted. Cheers!
Slashsev
another tough one 100% DO acceptance or take another yr off and do MCAT to break 30...id still apply to get familiar with the cycle
advair250
3.87 AMCAS, you never know if your ECS will catch someones eye. But if you can focus and re-take the MCAT, you'll be solid for MD. Otherwise DO.
miyagi01
thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it. based on my stats what low-tier American schools do you think I have the best shot at? In addition what Canadian schools? Does getting a masters provide a benefit at American institutions?
Slashsev
US doesnt really care (looks nice) US has special masters programs, and medshcool is filled with these kids they get a masters be taking 1st yr med classes-- that looks better, some give automatic interviews your mcat is whats holding u back
Slashsev
but like i said, apply broadly and EARLY keep close contact with admissions put in a couple of DOs and see what happens you are sitting at a good position,
miyagi01
thanks for the words of advice, I know my MCAt is lacking and it is really frustrating to get the same score on a repeat. I expect to submit my primary on the first day possible and apply to as many schools as possible. Hopefully it works out.
advair250
Good to see you retook the MCAT and did well, apply the first day to USMD and apply broadly.
