elastichero
When do American schools usually start interviewing? Do they only take place at the school/or the state the school is located in? Do they ever do alumni interviews or skype interviews?
Der Kaiser
depends on the school. some schools are notorious for filling up early and interviewing in july onwards. Most begin interviewing around Sept./Oct. and continue to do so until Feb./Mar.. While certain schools say it does not matter when you interview (chances are equal), other schools do not follow this rule. That is why it is always best to apply early (plus, if you get an acceptance you can rest easy).
elastichero
I see, thank you. But interviews are always conducted at the school or near the school?

Differs by the year, according to which month your ERAS application is submitted. Differs by specialty, program. This year, for FM, around middle of October, and all the way to the end of Jan, or beginning of Feb. Always in the same state. Could be at a nearby site, usually at an affiliated building of the program. Almost always onsite. No skype interviews, I've never come across skype interviews for the final interview. They might do a pre-interview interview based on a phone call or via skype. Never heard of alumni interviews either.
Der Kaiser
The trick is to prioritize schools you really want and interview there as soon as possible. Most schools will give you a decision quickly and then if accepted you can cancel other interviews and save some money. If by chance you apply to 20 schools and get 20 interviews you may have to decline some, but that is the nature of the game (and if you get 20 interviews consider yourself lucky). PLASTICSX
When do American schools usually start interviewing? Some interview in August, but mostly September through February. Decisions are rolling or March for non-rolling schools. Do they only take place at the school/or the state the school is located in? Yes, it shows that you're making a commitment traveling to the school Do they ever do alumni interviews or skype interviews? These are usually only done in person. Again, they want to see that you're able to make the commitment to travel etc.
