  1. It's tough - last year Mac notoriously took 16 of their own students as residents. I think you probably need to do an elective at Mac to have a good shot of matching there. That being said, I think the focus overall is very resident-centered and trying to ensure your learning needs are met. Staff are super collegial. No free lunches though.. Lol Toronto has lots of formal teaching by top notch specialists, but has less of a sociable environment amongst their residents which is understandable given their size. Lots of focus on research and mentorship, but I think Mac can also boast that. Ottawa I thought was a very similar culture to Mac, and I felt very supported as a student on elective there. Strong resident-focused program for sure, but a very busy specialty because of lots of inpatient vs clinic experience. Residents all seemed very happy and knowledgeable. Queens has had a major change to their curriculum lately. I heard it was not the best program before but has made lots of changes. Don't know much about it otherwise.
  2. make sure you are doing your best blue steel, and keep the stache on for movember guys
  3. are you applying this year? you should! I'd do Mac, UofA, UofT and maybe UofC this year for sure. if that doesn't work out, I'd rewrite to get a 10 in VR at least. that'll increase your chances at UofC, Mac, and open up doors to Queen's and Dal. with a GPA that strong, that VR might not hold you back. but I'd consider rewriting if you don't interview or get in anywhere this year
  4. single item? my trusty macbook pro but my dad helped me pay for that, so my next purchase will probably be my biggest: iphone 5 (when it comes out haha) if you could travel anywhere in the world right this second, where would you go?
  5. do you remember this guy's name? I read a maclean's article about him, it'd be good to find and post in this forum!
  6. your cGPA is good for queen's, and your MCAT looks good too. make sure your LORs are strong and that your ABS is polished! UWO - guaranteed interview based on the last 2 year's stats (as long as you have >9 in PS and >10 in BS) Ottawa - again, really work on that ABS! UofT - you might not apply for weighted GPA, but you should make a special request and provide any documentation from your physician at the time to prove you dropped the course for medical reasons. they may choose to give you the weighting, or may choose not to. in any case, your cGPA is good for UofT too even if you don't get the weighting. Mac - good cGPA, good VR, just nail CASPer OOP - apply to Dal and UofC for sure! maybe UBC if you think your ECs are strong enough and you have the pre-reqs. good luck!
  7. you should apply... but make sure you meet MCAT cut offs! you are guaranteed an interview at UWO if you can get an 11 in VR, got one at queen's if you have R writing sample and 10/10/10 MCAT (and decent LORs), Mac depends on how well you do on VR and CASPER and UofT does a weighted GPA that works out in your favour (a lot of your first year will be discounted). you also have a 3.845 GPA for ottawa... and if they round up that's a 3.85 which is good enough for non-Ottawa, IP Ontario applicants. good luck!
  8. ACCEPTED!!!! never thought I'd be posting this here Hamilton Campus cGPA 3.80 VR 10 IP 4th year I was really confident about my interview... but I'm willing to say there was a fair bit of luck on my side too! it just proves that it only takes 1 interview to get in! ahhhhh!!!!
  9. I have friends in HRM and I myself applied... it seems that there is quite a bit of overlap in terms of the courses you have to take (epi, stats, critical appraisal) and then from there, you really focus on a public health at UofT but I liked the HRM program at Mac better because you'll need to do epi research with anyone, but there's greater variety for thesis choice (and a lot of the researchers at McMaster associated with the program are Canada research chairs). the downside is you have to TA to get funding at HRM, whereas I think you go on a placement in UofT instead... so different ways to get money I guess
  10. nervously waiting for UBC medicine interviews
  11. awww renin! he doesn't deserve you (^ 6 words too.. )
  12. two days 'til I'm done MCAT (and more seriously): mistakes are fixed easier than regrets
  13. hey cnb, I definitely think it's worthwhile for you to rewrite. UWO and Queens are automatically discounted for you with that score, and if you want to apply to them then I'd recommend the rewrite. if you're worried about your VR decreasing, I wouldn't give it too much thought. this year was a fluke I think with UWO's VR going up to 11 and Queen's WS going to R (although this has happened in the past, so maybe try and work on WS while you're at it). I know many applicants who got into Mac with just a 10 in VR. I'd say get your PS to at least 10 and WS to R and maintain your scores in other sections and you'll be golden when you apply again! also, the July 8/16 dates seem to work better for you, so go with them. good luck rewriting.. I know how painful it is
