I think that you can prepare for the MCAT completely on your own and still get top scores. I did the MCAT last year with zero studying and got 506. I could not study because I was working full time and I had family obligations. This year I studied for about 150 hours , and I got a respectable score. I spent 8 months for independent study and got a good score as well. I used Kaplan's prep books, khans academy, and bought a bunch of practice questions and full lengths from AAMC.
