Here's the CARMS Match Results for the 2002 UWO Graduating Class:

 

Total Students: 96

Western is 1 of 13 Medical Schools that participate in the CARMS match (Makes up 7.7% of the schools, not sure about the % by population. . .)

 

Family Medicine 27

Internal Medicine 13

General Surgery 9

Pedeatrics 8

Emergency 4

Anaesthesia 4

Obstetrics/Gynaecology 4

Psychiatry 4

Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine 3

Radiology 2

Neurology 2

Plastic Surgery 2

Optholomology 1

Dermatology 1

Cardiac Surgery 1

Orthopedics 1

Urology 1

Radiation Oncology 1

Pathology 1

Taking the year off 2

Unmatched 6

 

As for Schools, Western students matched to. . .

Western 28

U of T 24

Mac 10

Ottawa 6

Queen's 5

McGill 4

U of A 4

UBC 4

Manitoba 3

Calgary 2

USA 1

 

'Where' people match varies incredibly with what people want to do. . . So don't take TOO much stock into specific specialties (ie if you're interested in "Laboratory Medicine" and nobody matched to that. . . could me a function of noone in the class being interested in Lab medicine)just notice that Western students did pretty well at getting into 'competitive' and 'ultra-competitive' specialties

 

That being said - some thoughts to ponder. . .

15 people matched to Surgical specialties

20 Matched to 'Competitive' specialties (ie peds, ER, etc.)

6 matched 'ultra-competitive' specialties (ie Plastic Surgery, Opthomology, Dermatology, Urology)

 

Also, I'm not 100% sure of the number of spots available for each specialty, but if the numbers of spots available in each specialty are roughly the same this year as last, the following is interesting. . .

Western grads took 3/12 Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (or 25% of the spots)

Western grads took 4/17 Emergency spots (or 23.5% of the spots)

Western grads took 2/10 of the Plastics spots (or 20% of the spots)

Western grads took 1/5 Derm spots (or 20% of the spots)

Western grads took 8/64 Peds spots (or 12.5% of the total spots)

 

Of course, then there's other specialties we didn't match as many too. . . a lot of how a graduating class matches depends on who's interested in what specialty.

 

Bottom Line - Western is a solid school for matching to the specialty of your choice.
