McCoy
Does anyone know if the CFPC's plus one program would qualify a Canadian doc to work abroad in emergency medicine? Or do we think that the RCPSC pathway would be required?
blah1234
That's going to depend on the specific country you're thinking about and their requirements. An adjacent issue would be also if you could get a work visa for those specific countries. Do you have specific places in mind?
McCoy
Agreed. Anywhere really, but the easy ones like the UK, Australia, New Zealand... I've gone down the rabbit hole of government websites and saw a few mentions about the RCPS but nothing about the CFPC plus one program. I know it would be best to just contact people there, but I'm quite a few years away from that. Just thought I would ask here out of curiosity in case somebody knew. icewine
Short answer is: yes you can work in Australia as a FP plus one EM, work visas aside. Long answer: In Australia there is no path for FP plus one EM to become a fellow of the Australasian College of EM, which is the Australian emergency medicine specialist title. The bare minimum requirement for recognition is 3 PGY training years in emergency medicine, which the FP +1 does not meet (the RC EM does meet this requirement). What does this mean? If you want to work in large hospitals and major cities in Australia as a FP +1 you will be working as a registrar (their analogue of a senior resident) rather than as a consultant (attending). There are plentiful numbers of Australasian College of EM fellows and fellowship would be the minimum requirement to get hired as a consultant at the large hospitals. The salary and benefits are very good as a registrar and practically a FP +1 would probably have a lot of leeway with the supervising consultants-but you are still under supervision. It is a different story in the rural and regional hospitals. Like Canada, rural Australia is plagued by doctor shortages and assuming a valid work visa I foresee no difficulties getting a job as a consultant in rural Australian emergency rooms with a FP +1.
