Hello there.

I am a first year enriched health student in Dawson College, I am trying to get into Med because of my passion for the domain.
I want to get advice regarding Cegep in general and the path after it, my grades are fine until now, but not as high as I want because I keep making mistakes due to inattention in exams. My grades in French, humanities and English are all in the top 90s, in Calculus and Chemistry they are around 95%, Physical Ed is 100. I am struggling more in mechanics, I feel like I messed up the last two tests even though I understand the material fully and did hundreds of questions, my grade without the second test is 89, but it might drop. The thing is that I cannot visualise what the Cote R is, since it isn't just a percentage grade. I know that McGill or any other med school wants a cote r of around 36, but I am getting very pessimistic and starting to see that perhaps I will have something in the low 30s or 20s. My CV is pretty good I would say, but I feel that everything is in vain in a way. I wanted to see if someone has had a similar experience, and how he got out of it (or what happened to him in the end.)

With the grades you mentioned you’ll be fine. You have better grades than 99% of people trust me. 95% in Calculus and chemistry will give you a great r score (36+ for sure!)

also, I would say 35 r score is enough for med school since it’s been dropping in the past few years. Of course higher = better but 35 would for sure make you an average applicant.

Thanks, I am trying my best to get a 100 on the finals, this way I can try to compensate for any risk. hoping it goes well.

Hello!

I’m going to attend Dawson Health science program in the upcoming fall semester. My averages in sec 4&5 were 94%, but my classes were a tidy bit more difficult as I was enrolled in an IB program. I’m looking forward to maximizing my R-Score as  my dream is to pursue an education in the medical field, preferably at the university of McGill. That being said, I imagine that some of you have finished your first 2 semesters at Dawson. Therefore, I was wondering if it’s possible for some of you to recommend some teachers there, as the month of August is approaching (I would be the most grateful person ever). Any type of small detail about a teacher or just any comment would be greatly appreciated.

P-S: what would your top advice be?

THANK YOU!!

Hello.

I finished my first year at Dawson, and my R score was great thank God. I won’t recommend science teachers, because you can’t choose them anyway. However, for your general courses you should check the ratemyteachers group on Facebook. You should first go to the timetable and registration guide (which is found in Omnivox) and type in the name of your course, then get all the names of the teachers who are teaching. Then search the name of the teacher in the group and repeat this for all teachers in all the general education subjects. You should have a pretty solid list then.

Because I have two organisations to manage besides my studies, my situation is a bit more complicated then the rest, the other students have more time and energy than me to study. I was still able to significantly outperform them by following multiple principles and I advise you to do the same:

1- Never compare your grades with anyone, don’t tell anyone about what you’re getting in your exams, you will just hurt yourself.

2- Bad exams do happen, if you did what your part of studying and preparation however, and still got a bad grade, don’t linger on it. Get on your knees and try to focus on your next tasks.

3- Go out with friends every week. It will help increase your energy.

4- Don’t create beef with your teachers even if they unjustly treat you. Escalating from your side will only make matters worse

5- Aim for perfection in grades, even if you know you can’t achieve it.

And finally, I can tell you that overall the academics aren’t difficult. There are bumps every now and then but it is all doable if you work with dedication, so good luck.
