English as a pre-req

I heard that some med schools in Western side of Canada and also some med schools in States as well.

Is that mean any Englsih course will be fine as long as

it contains essay componenet?

For instance, my school, UWO have first year english courses that all contains essay.(They call it essay course)

Is that mean any Englsih will be OK? or is there any requirements for being English pre-req?

 

any advice will be appriciated.

Get started on stuff early. There is plenty of help available if you need it, but it will be of little use if you're scribbling on your assignment at the last minute or cramming for your exam on the night before. Create a practical schedule, stick to it, and you'll find the workload much more manageable.

I totally agree with Lactic Folly:

 

Your main goal should be to NEVER FALL BEHIND. When you're assigned something in class like homework or a paper, start on it ASAP so you can get help from profs or friends if you're ever stuck. It's really difficult to get a hold of profs the week you have a midterm or an assignment is due, because that's probably when everyone is asking the prof questions about it.

 

Also, make sure you plan out your week in advance and ensure that you're studying every subject on a regular basis(once a week is not good for retention).

 

The final thing is to pre-read. Some people will just skim over the notes for the lecture beforehand so that they get a general idea of what's going on. But i've found that doing the readings AND the homework problems(especially in Math, Physics, and Chem courses) before you go to lectures will GREATLY aid in your understanding of the material being taught in lectures.

You should try to do something outside of school as well. Join some clubs or intramural teams. It's important to do well academically, but you'll need to have some fun as well!

Everything said so far is pretty good. Just do ALL your work ahead of time, and study study study! Even if you think you know the subject, study it more. I found that when the exam came I often thought I knew everything until I got my grade back, and then realized all the points I missed from the marker's comments.

Watch when you party. It's good to get out and have a good time, and there are more than enough opportunities to do so. Don't blow a Midterm by hitting the big party the night before, there will be more parties. Check to see that you have all the pre-reqs you'll be needing both for med, and for any 2nd year courses you'll need to take for med pre-reqs.

 

If you're living on your own, Kraft Dinner is a cheap Godsend, allthough it doesn't fit with Atkins;) . Beware the Freshman 15, which can be avoided by keeping in a few rec league sports. Being competitive with others can work, but competing to better yourself will work. Help others out too. The more you help others, the more you study for yourself, learn to teach, and make valuable friends. Learn to budget quickly. You don't want to be poor by the end of October, and have no money for Christmas holidays. Meet your profs, share ideas with them, and who knows, you might get a great contact for a summer job. Oh, and don't be afraid to ask questions. If you don't understand something, chances are that 50% of everyone else doesn't either, but just don't have the balls to inquire.

 

Experience everything new that you can! University is about discovery in every aspect.
