First-Year Courses

Does anyone have any suggestions for choosing a program of study (i.e. specialist/2 majors/major+2 minors)? The specialist course load is quite heavy, but is it worth the effort? Or, for 2 majors, what are some good choices?

This has been discussed at length recently... I suggest you take a look through some older topics in this forum.

As for what you should pick... choose something that interests you, that you think you will be happy studying and that YOU will do well in. It doesn't matter if that something is biochem or art history... molecular biology or classics... psych or physics, etc, etc, etc.

What I enjoy might not be what you would enjoy... I did philosophy along with a bunch of music and nutrition courses and a biomed major.... this is not the path for everyone but I definitely enjoyed it!

basically what steered my post were two things

1) does it interest me

2) can i potentially excel in it

i managed to find a program that had courses i was interested in (wiht teh odd exception like ... a biochem course), and i went with that. i think its difficult to find something that has ALL the courses you are interested in...i think you will have to make sacrifices here and there, esp. in a specialist which can sometimes be restrictive (depending on the specialist...for example, human bio specialsts at uoft are broader). double majors may offer more flexibility.

i also thought about how well i can do in the courses the program requires me to take. i find personally, the more something fascinates/excites me, the more eager i am to learn about it, and the knowledge is encoded more effectively if you value it.

for example..i still remember some of hte finer details from my first year pscyh class. if i truly wasn't interested/passionate about the subject, i think those would be long gone bye now.
