Guest UBC expansion plans
UBC Med school considers them to be "provincial" med school and as such, preference is given to people who are from BC. However, if they are planning to expand their number of seats to 200 (a 56% increase in seats), is it likely that they will have enough good applicants to fill all the seets? Will they have to resort to accepting out of province students? Since there are about 700 applicants to UBC med, a first year class of 200 would be an acceptance rate of about 29% which would be the highest in Canada. Currently, the acceptance rate for in province students at UBC is favorable. However, if they open up their applications to out of province students, they will reduce the chances of in province students to be accepted. Guest Ian Wong
I doubt they'll open up significantly to OOP students, but anything's possible. Each year there are plenty of awesome candidates who are turned away, and the medical school's mission first and foremost is to produce doctors to stay in BC to fill the every increasing gap of local physicians. The number of applicants to UBC has been rising steadily, I'd say we are nearer 900+ applicants, currently, although we'll see how the tuition hikes influence that in the upcoming time.
