I was offered a room by UBC housing on Aug 9th. The offer expiry date is Aug 12th! I was just wondering why give students such short time to think things over. Also, is it ok if I accept the offer on Aug 12th the expiry date or do I have to do it before that, which is today? thanks a lot!
Guest walkorbike
Hi, dentisthopeful. I don't know what you have decided, but on-campus housing IMHO, is a great way to go. You will make friends who will stay with you throughout undergrad, and you are super-close to classes and the library. It's fun, too. They don't give you much time to think things over, because there are many other folks on the waiting list (3000, last I heard). I don't know if your offer will have expired if you have waited till tomorrow to contact them....anyway, good luck and happy studies. -walkorbike
Guest smooth operater
I am pretty sure you can accept it and cancel it later, but you won't get your deposit back. If I were you, I would live on rez for sure without questioning. Just read my posts in the general fourm to see why. Living on rez will ENHANCE YOUR FIRST YR EXPERIENCE TREMENDOUSLY! But it comes with A PRICE TAG. I know some friends who want to live in rez but can't afford it. They are willing to give up all the benefits you can get in rez just to save $$. And I start to suspect UBC housing and food is ripping students off. People say cafe food at Vanier and Totem is cheaper, but they actually charge overhead fee everyday to meal point card holders And two of my friends were placed around 300th on the waitlist this yr, so they didn't think that they will get in rez and ended up renting a place. Right after the day they moved and signed the contract with the renter, UBC housing told that they've got a spot on rez. :rolleyes
Guest mitchie41
Yeah, at Totem and Vanier, you're charged something like $11 a day whether or not you eat in their caf. That's how your money runs out so fast when you buy a $2500 meal plan, but an average meal is only $2.

Guest scrubbed
Hey everyone, Now that the school year has ended, for those not in UBC Med at least, I thought it would be good to start a thread about interesting books, both medicine and non-medicine related that anyone has read and would like to recommend. To start things off: Medicine Atul Gawande, Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science www.amazon.com/exec/obido...8&v=glance Excellent book. Well-written and describes the uncertainity of medicine nicely. Much of the book comes from articles written in the New Yorker, so you can check those out through eJournals as well. Danielle Ofri, Singular Intimacies: Becoming a Doctor at Bellevue www.amazon.com/exec/obido...s&n=507846 Very touching stories. Brought me to tears a couple of times. Samuel Shem, House of God and Mount Misery www.amazon.com/exec/obido....y=0&Go=Go Classics, describing the personal struggles of medicine and relationships. Non-Medicine George Orwell, 1984 www.amazon.com/exec/obido...s&n=507846 Big brother is watching you! Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything www.amazon.com/exec/obido...s&n=507846 Describes an amazing amount of information about the world that we often take for granted.
