course load

Hi,

I am in a bit of a tricky situation. I switched programs during my undergrad, so while next year will be my fourth year in my new program, it will be my fifth year in university overall. I have always taken full course loads in university (five full courses a year). However, next year I could safely complete my degree with only four courses. Would this jeopardize my chances at successfully applying to U of A? Will my grades from my final year even be considered for medicine application purposes? I should also mention that I am an OOP (Ontario) applicant.

thank you so much for your guidance

I spoke to Marlene at the admissions office about this a few weeks ago - as long as you take at least 6 half-year courses (18 credits) over the entire school year, your marks will still be calculated into your overall GPA. If you take less than 18 credits, your marks will not be calculated into your overall GPA, but will be calculated into your prereq GPA if applicable. In your case, 4 full-year courses works out to 8 half-year courses, so you should be fine. (I asked her as an in-province applicant, but I'm assuming the same goes for OOPs). Hope this helps!
