Hi...

I was wondering, what are the chances of someone living in Ontario getting into an out of province med school? Is it worth it to apply to out of province schools, or are the chances too limited? Which universities are more receptive towards people from other provinces?

thanks alot!:)

Hi there,

Your chances will depend on the competitiveness of your application. Schools such as UBC and UofC receive many out-of-province applications per year. UofC's application process for out-of-province students is initially dependent upon your academic performance, i.e., based on the VR and BS sections of the MCAT plus your GPA. UBC's application process (at least in the previous number of years) depends on strengths in academic and non-academic activities. Then there are other schools such as U. of Manitoba, which value the MCAT highly.

You might wish to take a look at the requirements for each school from their websites and compile the information to see which program and program's process might best suit you and your application strengths.

Cheers,

Kirsteen

As Kirsteen said, almost all non-Ontario schools have very specific cutoffs for OOP applicants. Look at the websites for the different schools because the cutoffs are usually posted explicitly.

If you make those cutoffs definitely apply. The chances may look daunting since very few people are accepted first round but, remember, quite a few people are waitlisted and these schools often go through their OOP waitlists quickly. So the chances are better than they initially appear.
