Med School in Poland, Residency in Canada?

My girl friend is going to school in Poland. I cant recall the name of the school but it is an American Medical School in Poland. So she is going to be doing her USMLE-1 and USMLE-2 there. My question is do you think once she graduates that there is a chance that she can get a residency in Canada? She was born in Poland and moved to Canada when she was 7 so she is a Canadian Citizen. She wants to be a Obstetrician. Any help would be appreciated.

There's always a chance.

IMGs (both non Canadians and Canadians who studied abroad) though DO suffer a tougher time when it comes to CaRMS. . . most provinces they get slotted into the second round where there might not be ANY spots left in a chosen specialty. As well there's a LOT of paperwork and hullabaloo (ie writing the MCCQE pt 1 and 2, NOT the USMLEs) to get into the CaRMS system. This can take a few years to sort out. . .

There is a remote chance she might get a spot in obstetrics. But if it is Obs she is interested in, she should also seriously look at doing low-risk Obs though family medicine. There are more spots available in family than obstetrics. . . it may be realistic for her to get into a family program, but maybe not so much for an obstetrics/gynecology. Of course she's always free to aim for OB/gyn, but I think if she's realistic she should be willing to look into this other option.

The American board exams USMLE 1 + 2 can be taken and considered equivalent to the Canadian ones so you could take the USMLEs and be just fine with the CARMS process.

Correct me if I am wrong anyone but this was disscussed somewhere somewhile back here.

Good luck.

I may be wrong but it is only in Ontario that USMLE is accepted as equivalent and that is if you are applying to the Ontario IMG program as an IMG. I think that for CARMS even in the 2nd iteration that IMG's are allowed to participate, you need the Canadian exams. Ontario does not accept IMG's through the CARMS match.

I must have thought of the MCCEE exam...this was from the website of the medical council of Canada, so I have made a wrong conclusion previously:

www.mcc.ca/english/examin...nEE_e.html

"Exception: An IMG who is a specialist certified by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties may request an exemption from the MCCEE."

That clause I think refers to an IMG who has already completed his or her residency training in the US and is looking to practice in Canada. Not too many IMG's do such a move.

For an IMG with no residency training in the US or Canada and looking to enter a residency program in Canada, MCCEE mat still be required.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ive talked to some Doctors and they cant officially confirm anything, but they said you can usually get an OB/GYN residency in Canada if is what you want. Apparently OB/GYN is a extremely time consuming/stressful job and not many people want to do it.

Hi Anthony,

Quote: "you can usually get an OB/GYN residency in Canada if is what you want."

Not meaning any disrespect to the physicians you have spoken to, but unless they've gone through the residency match recently you might want to reconsider how much weight you give their opinions.

If you look at the CaRMS match report for this year(1), 54 of the 58 Ob/Gyn spots were filled after the first round. That left four spots to be filled in the second round, and as mentioned earlier IMGs for the most part are restricted to matching in the second round. Two spots were at the University of Saskatchewan and two at the University of Alberta.

629 IMGs participated in the second iteration match, with an overall success rate of about 13%. The four unfilled Ob/Gyn spots were filled by IMGs, but I don't know how fierce the competition was for those spots. I doubt that all 629 IMGs were shooting for those positions, but I imagine there were more than four IMGs competing for them.

I agree with '05 that your gf needs to be realistic about her chances of practicing in Canada as an Ob/Gyn, and that FM + low-risk Obs might be more achievable as an IMG. Even then, sad to say, there are no guarantees...

Best of luck!

I believe that the second two ob/gyn spots were in Manitoba... not at UofA... UofA is one of the most competitive Ob/gyn programs in the country.

Both Manitoba and Sasketchewan's ob/gyn programs are kind of looked at as the 'last chance' for people applying to ob/gyn and many ontario, alberta, nova scotia and bc people do not apply to those programs or do not rank them. They both have had some issues in the past so they are not the most popular both from a location and a program perspective.

On the subject of ob/gyn competitiveness... things have really changed in Canada over the past 5 years. Ob/gyn used to be a specialty that had real difficulty filling all of its spots... it used to be relatively easy to get an ob/gyn spot if you wanted one. However, things have changed. Not sure exactly why, but ob/gyn is now one of the more competitive specialties... it isn't optho for sure, but it is definitely getting to the same level as paeds or orthopedics in terms of number of applicants and number of spots. It may be difficult to match to ob/gyn as an IMG... but it won't be impossible. It also fluctuates based on the year and the popularity of ob/gyn with cdn grads. Some years may be more difficult than others. However, as the ob/gyn dept at UWO pointed out to our class, ob/gyn is getting tougher to get into and it is definitely a 'seller's market' right now for the ob/gyn programs.

Oops, my mistake! My eye must have shifted a column to the right when I looked back up to the top of that table. The spots were at Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Cheers,
