Guest satsumargirl
dailynews.mcmaster.ca/story.cfm?id=2954 Hey Everyone, I saw this posting for MAC and wondered if anyone knew if Ottawa also had any plans on increasing enrollment this fall? Guest Gordo58
Is it really smart to increase the class size when they do not increase the number of residency seats... that means more people competing for the same spots in four years... which of course makes no sense... but then again, this is medical school... Guest satsumargirl
Well, I imagine that in 4 years they would have to increase the residency spots. Just like they announced an increase in the number of residency spots this year to accomodate the increase in class size schools made a few years ago. It would just be a happy thought to know that our odds may be a little better. I'm sure those waiting to go to MAC are thrilled with the announcement! Guest patentforamenovale
www.cpso.on.ca/Whats_New/newsrelease/newsmay1105.htm Medical school enrolment boost an important step For Immediate Release May 11, 2005….Today’s provincial budget contains a commitment to boost enrolment in medical schools by 15 per cent. A 15 per cent increase in the number of students entering medical schools in Ontario will boost enrolment from 704 positions to more than 800 positions. This is in addition to the 56 new medical students who will begin their training when the Northern Ontario School of Medicine opens in September 2005. (emphasis added) “Increasing our domestic capacity is an important step that will help increase the supply of physicians in Ontario. We hope that this enrolment increase will take effect with the school year beginning this September,” said College President Dr. Gerry Rowland. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario receives telephone inquiries from approximately 5,000 Ontarians every month who are attempting to find a family physician. The College’s 2004 survey of Ontario’s physicians found that just 16.5 per cent of family physicians are able to accept new patients and that a significant proportion of Ontario physicians are approaching retirement age. “There is currently a world-wide shortage of physicians. It is clear that Ontario must be a real leader both in terms of producing and attracting qualified medical graduates. Today’s announcement demonstrates the government’s commitment to increasing our domestic supply, as it continues to take action to facilitate the participation of international medical graduates in Ontario’s health care system,” said Rowland. In the past six years, the College has licensed physicians who have received their medical training from 105 different countries. The College will also continue to encourage the government to make training positions available for Canadian residents studying at international medical schools. “The best quality care for the people of Ontario by the doctors of Ontario.” -30- Media Inquiries: Kathryn Clarke (416)967-2600 ext 378 So do any Ottawa students know about whether Ottawa is going to go ahead with this increase? I am really curious to know whether and how much of an increase there will be at the various schools this year....
