when I called the admissions office at EVMS just for a status check, I was told that the committee had met recently and had decided to give me an acceptance. The thing is that I sent in a letter of interest a week and a half before. So, I wonder if that made a difference....

I don't know how much time they'll me to decide, but they did say that an acceptance package would be arriving in the mail soon.

I really liked EVMS' location (Nofolk-Virginia Beach) and the students there just seemed very friendly and happy there. I don't if that's enough for me to want to go there, but it feels great to actually have some options for a change. :)

From what I understand, we are technically considered "OOS" for state funded US Medical Schools for admissions purposes. For financial aid purposes, we are considered "international".

When you say "state funded" US schools, are you referring to non-private schools like Penn State? But for private schools like Columbia, we would still be considered as internationals?

Btw, congratulations! I wish I were in your position right now;)

Thanks Quester. It's been a long road getting here for me. But it still feels just as sweet. :)

And yes, for non-private schools (i.e. Penn State) that accept Canadians, we are considered OOS. Private schools that frequently accept Canadians consider us international. But obviously those private schools supposedly don't care about citizenzhip.

Guys I need advice, remind me again why going to the states for med school is beneficial over an respectable Canadian university? I'm also holding acceptances at UofA and UofC... and I don't think either of these NY schools have any financial assistance for us internationals! Expensive, far from friends and family... but amazing city and experiences?

there is a very relevant debate going on in the thread "for those waiting for both..."

but to summarize it seems apparent that if you want to come back to canada it will be much harder than at a canadian school. if you want to stay in the US you face the uphill battle of a visa sponsor during residency and this includes the less coveted J1 visa.

where do you want to practice? if you say canada then go u of a or u of c which by the way what are your thoughts on that debate? if you say US there is the other caveat that you need to find a visa for your residency which may be harder if you want a competitive program with comparable american applicants

also ... CONGRATS

Thanks, it definitely puts it into perspetive for me... especially the uphill battle component. Also, the dilemna I have could be compromised with me staying in Alberta for the MD undergrad; the question I have is HOW LIKELY IS IT TO GET INTO A STATE-SIDE RESIDENCY? After writing all the USMLEs and such from a Canadian school? If that's difficult, how likely is it to IMMIGRATE to the US after finishing residency here in Canada? Judging from my questions, I would definitely prefer ending up in the States in the long run.

I think that it depends what specialty you're talking about. Some Canadian training is not recognized in America and vice versa. It also depends on how in demand you will be as this determines whether or not you can get a visa sponsor. If you do want to migrate to America, I doubt it would be that difficult since it's a common thing for us to lose doctors to Canada.

If you write the USMLE's you can definitely get into a US residency as well. I think it's done fairly often. The webmaster of this forum Ian Wong did that and has made several posts about going to the US from CDN med school.

If you eventually want to go to the US, I think you're fine with going to school in Alberta. My thinking is that the primary consideration is if you want to live for the next four years vs. how much it would cost to go to school there.

This is my dilemma as well. I got into one school in the states and I am on the waitlist for another one that I really liked, but I also got into a school in ON. I wish money wasn't an issue and I could just pick the school I liked the most, but the tuition difference is pretty big (especially looking at it over four years). It is a tough one though, even if you know where you want to do residency later on.

Coming from a accredited US medical school is so much better compared to other traditional IMG in terms of landing a residency choice in Canada. Having said that it is still probably worse as compared to CMG. On the other hand, CMG will have as much as a tough battle if they want to land a residency choice in US as compared to AMG anyways. So in the end it balances out in terms of the total chances for you to land a position in North America. But there are so many spots for residency position in the US that it would be logical to maximally use them as you can, even if you end up with a J1.

A family friend finished Western and applied to residency in the States. I believe she applied to around 100 different programs and got 12 interviews. She ended up matching in Boston with J1 for Cardiology.

If IMGs with Russian/Chinese/Indian/Pakistani MBBS/MD degrees are getting sponsored for visas for residency programs, how hard it would be to sponsor a visa for a student who actually has an LCME accredited MD degree and better references than those IMGs? Moreover, I was looking at Cornell Qatar match rates, those students are not US residents but they still got matched into good programs i.e. anesthesia? I am assuming that getting matched into a program means that the program director has sponsored your visa (J1 or H1b, whichever it is)

Vice versa, I think somebody from RFU managed to match into Family Med at U of T and another RFU graduate matched into Psychiatry at McMaster. If you're from an accredited US school, I think it's possible to come back for residency in Canada but not for the overly competitive ones (ie derm, rads, etc) and this is because it's already difficult for Canadians to be matching into these specialities (ie I think U of T Rads has about 8 or so spots)
