Tan008
There is no evidence to support this at all, but there is no evidence disproving it either. If it helps, there was a canadian on SDN who was from Albany Meds, and received a few interviews for radiology in ontario. opted to stay in the US because of his wifey. There are always people who are going to work hard in order to go one way or another. I think much of it depends on the year, on your marks, on the specialty, on the program, on the hospital, and tons of other things I'm sure I have no clue about. I think if you work hard, you'll get a residency you're happy with (whether it's in Canada or the US is irrelevant to me at least). The same cannot be said for IMGs. Dayne67
spanish fly, first off, congrats on albany and UMD...any tips on the Albany? i.e. why have so many been rejected? It could be because Albany specifically states on its website that it gives strong preference to US residents. It says however that it will consider "exceptional" international applicants. If they are looking only for exceptional applicants, these are the applicants that are most likely applying to Albany as a back-up, and will probably get in somewhere else. SpanishFly
spanish fly, first off, congrats on albany and UMD...any tips on the Albany? i.e. why have so many been rejected? Thanks joshto For Albany, I can't really say why so many were rejected...I figured this school would be an easier one to get into than any other that I applied to due to lower avg. stats and it's not a state school, unlike most of the other schools I applied to (UC's just ate my primary AND secondary money), but maybe I was wrong ...that being said, my tip is to a) know the school and it's program pretty well so that you can show some genuine enthusiasm about Albany when you interview...because you do have a little bit of a hill to climb in proving why you'd rather go here than stay at a Canadian school..I got asked this at both schools I interviewed at and apply earlier. I know it's been said many times before, but I didn't apply early and I think I missed out on some great higher-tier schools because of it...that being said, I now get to join the CMA so I don't really care anymore It could be because Albany specifically states on its website that it gives strong preference to US residents. It says however that it will consider "exceptional" international applicants. hmm...really? wow good thing I read the website before I applied ()...I'm so oblivious sometimes. It really is a weird situation with Albany. If they are looking only for exceptional applicants, these are the applicants that are most likely applying to Albany as a back-up, and will probably get in somewhere else. That's exactly the vibe I got from most interviewees on that day. I also spoke to a med student the day before and he explained that a lot of people with stellar scores do get rejected for this very reason...tbh I think my interviews were great...out of all the interviews I had this year (Canadian+American), I thought these two were the best...we went longer than all the other interviewees because we lost track of time, and I was a little surprised I didn't get an acceptance right away (whereas my immediate acceptance for UM was a shocker)...ok I read that over and it sounds cocky..not meant that way. Anyways, good luck to those applying!
joshto
Thanks joshto a) know the school and it's program pretty well so that you can show some genuine enthusiasm about Albany when you interview what exactly do you mean by knowing the school well. what type of information would this be? UserName
go to the website of the medical school.. usually medical schools have tons of information like that... "our mission".. etc
SpanishFly
yea, I would just read the website, know the curriculum and it's strengths and weaknesses, and how those fit well with what you want. Any knowledge about the area is also a bonus, but particularly about American health care (this was a big topic during my interviews). I also couldn't really sleep the night before, so I turned the local news on, and set the timer, and it just so happened to be talking about upstate NY healthcare reforms etc....so the last thing I heard before I zonked out was some cool local info..that I think I used in my interview lol Basically, just know the differences between Canadian and American health care, know the pros and cons of both, have some ideas on hand for improvements to the system...and then know school-specific things (like the curriculum, and programs that you might want to get involved in). Dayne67
why no love from George Washington? I think that GW is not as Canadian-friendly as is claimed to be. Traditionally, they will accept one or two Canadians for their class (which has 180 students). It's easy to hand out interviews - especially when you interview more than 1000 students, but giving out an actual acceptance is another matter. I just think that Canadians are evaluated at a higher bar post-interview at GW.
marshan
I know someone from Canada that got accepted to GW just last week, she turned it down though, so maybe a spot will be opening up.

Wookus
I apologize for putting this off so for long. I hope this helps those who are applying this year. Stats: cGPA: ~3.80 MCAT: 34Q (10V/11B/13P/WSQ) EC's: intramurals, 4 years of hospital volunteering, NSERC, clubs, camp work. Primary (Late August): Tufts, UCLA, MCW, SLU, Stanford, MT. Sinai, NYMC, Albany, PennState, Georgetown, Tulane, Dartmouth, BU, SUNY Upstate, MSU, Case, Baylor, Jefferson, AECOM *UCLA, and Jefferson didn't send secondaries. Jefferson sent one this year for 2010, 365 days too late . Completed Secondary (Late October): MCW, SLU, Stanford, NYMC, Albany, PennState, Dartmouth, BU, SUNY Upstate, MSU, Baylor Hold: MCW, PennState --> Eventual rejection Interview: St. Louis University (February) Accepted: St. Louis University (June, withdrew acceptance) Lesson: Apply early. That is what pretty much killed me. I was scrambling for references and I couldn't complete all of the secondaries with the standard of quality I wanted given the time. I also spent a heck of a lot of money applying. Best of luck to everyone applying this year and I would be happy to answer any questions.
