The problem with Wayne State is that it's got a huge class to fill (one of the largest if not the largest medical school in the US), it's in a crappy city, and it's a middle-lower tier school. Now that's not to say it's a bad school. I'm sure the pathology you see in Detroit is much more varied than your typical Canadian school and you'll come out well trained. It's just the other factors make it a backup for most people (unless you're from the Windsor-Detroit area)

No, that's the thing. I think you'll see way more at Wayne than you will see even at Univ of Toronto in terms of pathology (trauma of course, but other things as well). So you will come out well-trained for sure.

There are about the same number of shooting deaths in Detroit in a week as there are in Toronto every year. The fact that healthcare is so messed up in the US helps too. They also do a good job at exposing us to real patients in the preclin years, especially in courses like genetics and neuro.

 

Wayne isn't too bad. Usually at the national average for USMLE so they don't do too bad of a job for preparing students.

Keep in mind good stats will only get you to interviews. Generally, if you are well-rounded individuals with good extra-curriculars you should have a good chance at Wayne, or anywhere else for that matter.

Same here. It seems a lot of people were placed on the Alternate List even on SDN. Do you think sending them updates or letter of interest might help?

+1 on waitlist. I was actually waitlisted in oct and they sent me an update saying nothing is changed.

 

As for the LOI, I phoned them yesterday, and apparently they won't be looked at until after the general acceptance dates are past. She told me our files have been pre-ranked, once a month we will be notified on our status (on the acceptance dates much like today), and the LOI is something they MIGHT look at if say, someone else has the same ranking as us come summer. However she also told me it wouldn't hurt to email them a LOI, but it's not guarantee of anything either.

I will probably write one eventually, since it's no use if they don't look at it now.

so do people actually come off this alternate list before the summer? or would that be hoping for too much?
