Just curious, what kind of GPA and MCAT is necessary to be competitive in the US? I'm from the University of Waterloo if that matters at all. Also, do they do any weighted GPA's like we do here, such as looking at your last 3 years for example?

Thanks and congrats to all who got accepted!

To be fairly certain of an acceptance SOMEWHERE, I would say you need at least a GPA of 3.7 (all years, all courses) and an MCAT of 31-32. Schools do not drop years in the US. ALL your courses are looked at. However, the US is more holistic in that there are no magical cut-offs below which you are ineligible. Basically, they look at your whole application and see if your profile matches their mission. For example, a research intensive school like Stanford, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern (my old school) will care about a high GPA, high MCAT and research experience. A primary care oriented school will care about commitment to primary care and/or rural medicine. An historically black college (Meharry, Howard) will care and value your background and whether you are "disadvantaged" or not, much more so than your GPA (avg GPAs at those schools are like 3.4 or less but don't count on getting in unless you are black or hispanic).

They do not care about undergrad institutions. Most Americans only know about UT and McGill. But whether you are from a small liberal arts college in the US or Canada or a big name school like Harvard, it really doesn't matter.

Wow...I don't know really what to say. As bleak as things may have looked over the last number of years and doubt sometimes had set in, in the end hard work and perseverance has paid off. I was really excited about this school. It is amazing how much they love their school and definitely it is aggressive in continuously improving.

If any of you followed some of my posts from the interview invitation thread, I went through hell and high water to get there because of storm issues in Buffalo causing havoc on my travel plans. I ended up being stuck in Baltimore the night before my exam WITHOUT my luggage because they wouldn't unload. I bought a t-shirt from the gift shop and sweater to feel somewhat fresh. The sweater I bought because I checked my winter coat in my luggage and it was pretty cold in Baltimore that night. I ended up getting to Louisville almost an hour later than expected the next day. Bottom line, I was going to be at least 1 1/2 hours late for the interview day as I had to drive 2hrs+ from Louisville to Morehead, KY. I ended up changing socks and underwear at a tourist stop on my drive. In the end, I did my first interview day in runners, jeans, and the casual sweater I wore for my travels (the sweater from the airport would have been really tacky). Everybody was very understanding and saw the determination and desire I had to go to their program.

I think this is definitely a good example for anybody interviewing: show that you really want to go to that school. They will take note, even if it isn't as extreme as my example.

Congrats to EMCD and best of luck to all waiting or interviewing in the near future. Hopefully more people will be receiving their best Christmas present ever received.

did all of you that applied to the US apply to Canadian Med Schools as well? and what were your motives to go to the US? just curious as to know...

yes, i did apply to canadian schools (8 of them). my motive for applying to the US this year was being rejected from all 7 canadian schools i applied to last year! in the US they look at the whole picture (no cutoffs). now that i have visited a number of schools in the us i am contemplating going there even if accepted in canada.

Wow, that sounds horrible but I'm so happy it all worked out in the end! UK seems like it's the kind of school that does everything in their power to make their students happy. There's definitely a lot of school pride there! I liked UK so much that I went ahead and withdrew from some other schools that I interviewed at after getting that acceptance. Anyhow, congrats on the acceptance! Now you can relax after such a stressful trip! :D

@emcd, congrats on Tulane! I'm still waiting to hear back :P It's been over a month now. I wanted to call them but their automated machine said that status updates aren't available right now. I'll keep my fingers crossed. :)

maybe you can try sending an update letter to tell them you are still interested? at my interview they hinted that this might help. I drafted a letter this morning but obviously did not have to send it...i guess they knew i was thinking of them

congrats to all of you. getting a ps3 for Christmas this year seems is so incredibly unimportant when compared to your acceptances to med school! lol way to go

so, after reading some other threads, i get the sense that the whole residency matching and med school process would be easier in canada, just because there is no pressure of an exam like the USMLE. i hear for competitive residencies in the US, you have to DESTROY the USMLE, but in canada the whole process is really arbitrary and depends on interviews and how much people like you. (so less qualified people could get into competitive residencies), like obviously you guys, and especially not me have no clue what to specialize in for sure, but its just a thought i had...

your thoughts or comments?

Well the day after my interview I sent a letter to Dr. Beckman stating my stong interests and she replied right away that I'd hear back soon :P So a couple days ago I e-mailed her again. So we'll see :P It was a great school! Who was your letter addressed to?

Dr. Beckman is def the right person to go to from what the current students said on interview day. I really hope it works out for you! would be nice to have a canadian friend in the deep south!

congrats keith and emcd, great early Christmas presents. And both at southern schools - so if you want, you can escape this frigid Canadian winter next year. good job

Thanks rmitch8 and Rach! Kentucky is actually a 4 seasons state. And Rach, yeah it is definitely near the top of my list. Like emcd said, a US school is potentially a better option than a Cdn school if it interests you. I don't have too many more US places to worry about, but given the option to interview at one I am waiting on, I would definitely decline. The other one I would maybe consider. I have that one interview at Jefferson coming up. The way I am looking at interviews from now on is that I am interviewing them and they should impress, although taking my girlfriend's life into consideration will also factor in.
