Guest mE
Hi everyone, Does anyone know how tough is it to get into a competitive residency program (such as surgery) in U.S as a Canadian graduate??? Would it be much harder than getting into the same program in Canada??
Guest moo
Generaly Surgery is pretty easy to match into in Canada. It's also not that bad in the US, if you don't care about the type of program (community vs academic) or location.
Guest rads
Gen Surg is pretty easy to match into... although the competition is increasing (must be that Gray's Anatomy show... all the surgical interns are hot and sleeping with their attendings! ). In general though, a Canadian grad is going to have a harder time matching in the US. They are going to have to have a good reason to be there... Even if they are considered the same as a US grad in the NBME resident application system, most US residencies will NOT view them the same as a US grad. Remember, by taking you they are taking a RISK. The last thing a program wants/needs is a risky resident. So, you'll need to prove that you're superb. This can be done by awesome letters of recs, pubs, USMLEs, etc. Also, VISAs are another issue. Most hospitals will be reluctant to give you a H1 visa. They will most likely offer a J1 which means after residency, you will have to go back to Canada for at least two-years before returning stateside. Sucks.
