Daily Schedule?

Hey there,

Question for the moderatos:

What is a typical day at UC in first year like? I think most of us have seen the breakdown of units with the systems-based curriculum but I was curious as to the schedule on a much smaller scale (what time classes start, what time lunch is, etc. - you know, the important stuff! haha).

Cheers, and thanks,

Huffer

<title>Masters, then Med</title>

<pagetext>Hi,

I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who is in my situation and might be able to offer feedback.

I've completed my undergraduate degree, and though my ultimate goal is to study medicine, my GPA seems too low to be competitive at the moment. I'm interested in pursuing a Master's in a related field first, and hopefully will become a more competitive candidate this way. Can anyone tell me how graduate work is factored along with one's undergraduate GPA when applying to med school? Is it a 50/50 split to end up with your final GPA?

Thanks!

I am not sure about the specifics - but I will ask and get back to you.

But, I can tell you that a large portion of our class if made up of master and phD's.... You guys are very attractive at uofc

I was in a similar situation Jazzey in that my undergrad gpa was solid but not spectacular. I asked around to see if a grad degree would improve my chances for admission.

What I was told is that Calgary uses 6 criteria (gpa, mcat, extracirricular activities, 3 letters of reference, personal essay, and employment history) to assess candidates, and that everybody, undergrads or phds, are assessed the same. I wasn't discouraged from doing a graduate degree, but told that it was more important to make sure that I was solid in all six areas because a grad degree wouldn't make that much of a difference if I was deficient in the other areas.

I did a one year MA degree, got good grades and was able to replace one undergrad year with it, which boosted my gpa considerably. Other than that, I don't really know if it made that much difference or made me a more attractive candidate. But another thing to consider is that doing a grad degree can also open the door to more people to ask for letters of reference. And possibily also boost your employment history section if you can land some research or teaching experience while doing a masters.

I hope that helps a little bit...:)

<pagetext>Hi all

I'm thinking about going to university of calgary for my undergrad. Is it a good place for pre-med? How's the school like? Is the weather really cold?
