Hey all

I have a friend who wants to do an extra year of undergrad to boost his gpa..is it possible to do so? and if it is is this a popular tactic used by people to boost their gpa?

It is possible... it is fairly common. How it will be used by the medical schools depends entirely on the medical school in question. I suggest that your friend investigate carefully with each school that they are interested in to see how it will be used and what special 'rules' there are (if any) to make the victory lap year count. As an example, UWO specifically allows one 'victory lap year'... but there are a bunch of conditions that must be met in order for them to count the victory lap towards your GPA.
