Chances post-interview

Hi,

According to the UWO faq, last year 238 offers were extended for 133 spaces, when ~420 interviews were granted.

So 238/420 is a bit above 50%, which doesn't sound so bad.

Anyone know equivalent numbes for Queen's?

This may help you. About 470 interviews were granted, and 71 people turned down Queen's offer of admission (4 deferred and 96 spots were ultimately filled in 2003/2004). It has similar stats for the rest of the Canadian med schools too.

For 2004, ~450 were interviewed, and the class of 100 has a couple of deferred students from the year before. The class also has at least one person who was originally rejected -- Queen's went through their entire waiting list last year.

This may result in a bigger waitlist. Or not. Some negative press about the Q's program went out near the time offers were sent, and some people turned it down for that reason.

On average, Queen's offers close to 200 spots to fill the class of 100, some years less, some years more, it all depends on how many people accept and how many turn down the initial offer. Because of Queen's lack of geographical bias, you'll find a LOT of people nation-wide apply here, whether they are really gung-ho to come here or just as a backup.

In addition, the high MCAT cutoff means that most Queen's offers go to applicants who are also accepted elsewhere. There are obviously exceptions (I'm one), but many who are accepted at Queen's attend a University closer to home. Check the board archives for last summer and see how many went to TO instead, etc.

Overall, if you get to the interview your chances overall are pretty close to 50/50 of getting in. ~25% for initial acceptance, and another ~25% for getting in off the waitlist. Of course, if you got on the waitlist last year, you were offered a spot, so it might be wise to remember that if you get a waitlist notice (initially quite a drag, but joyous in the end if you are selected)!
