I got my orientation package today in the mail. I was flipping through the material, and came across a small purple-cover handbook. I was just wondering if anyone else has writing all through theirs...I think there must have been a mistake because it looks like the copy I received is a copy from last year (all the dates are 2003) that was revised for use this year (hence all the writing!) Did anyone else have this problem?

hrmm..seems like you hit the jackpot with that one! I didn't get one of the booklets that you mentioned...that is, it says "2004-2005" on it...

 

maybe you're the lucky winner and get a secret prize come 1st day of orientation?

I got my package today as well, and it has a purple oreitation handbook along with the other forms. I seem to have the right edition, with the right dates (2004-2005). Maybe one of the moderators would know what's going on with some people not getting it, and some getting the wrong edition.

Not to be picky (can't help it), but although I DID get the correct book, and admire its utility, I find it very annoying to read. All of the "special symbols" (e.g., quotations, apostrophes, etc.) are misrepresented as apparently random characters. For example, the sentence:

 

Patrick O'Malley states "Irish beer is best"

 

might read something like...

 

Patrick O^Malley states that @Irish beer is bestA

 

Maybe I'm being too perfectionist though?

I have no information to offer... other than it sounds like you may have gotten the wrong book by accident... they all look the same and when they are stuffing all of those papers into 133 envelopes, it is possible that someone picked up the wrong thing... I know they were trying to get things out ASAP...

 

Try calling the office and asking them to mail you out a copy of the 04-05 edition... they will have some extras left.

 

As for the printing problems with symbols being altered... I have no idea... didn't happen in the 02-03 edition that I had... but I haven't seen a copy since.

hi,

 

on the subject of computer stuff, i wondering how much we will be spending on printing. i heard/read somewhere that alot of notes are on webct and can be printed off. does this add up to alot of $$ over the year?

 

im considering investing in my own laser jet, if i buy through work, itll cost about $500. is it worth it?

Man, I can't believe you don't have your package yet! That must be REALLY frustrating! I've been on cloud 9 since recieving mine 2 days ago. It's like being accepted into medical school, all over again!

 

Just kidding, T-dawg. I admit, I tore it open like a hungry wolf serendipitously discovering a wayward lamb. But it wasn't quite as cool as I thought. Mostly just boring admin. stuff (what did I expect though?). I guess I was hoping for some kind of prelude to O-week (I mean the fun parts, not the utilitarian bits).

 

Instead, I got to read more about immunization requirements, codes of ethics, and power inequities in the learning environment.

 

Admittedly, the little purple book DOES add some atmosphere to my otherwise drap apartment.

 

Hang in there, T-dawg...soon you can share our elation.

Haha, thanks for all the responses...although I love my special purple book, I think I'm going to give admissions a quick email to see if I can grab a not-so-special one. Then I'll have two...!

The O-week website will be up soon so you can hopefully look at that excitedly. Anyways, the real fun is actually going through O-week and I promise it will be a blast! I loved it last year and your O-week looks virtually identical to ours (except for a couple events).
