Why do you want to come to UWO?

I have my interview this weekend, and im sure that the above question will come be comming up.

I've thought about it, and, for me personally, I feel that the medical school is a good fit for me foew a couple reasons. First, it seems as though past classes, and the school in general, is really a tight knit group. While i understant competition in medical school can be firce, it seems (from reading this board and the testiomonials on the UWO site) that the classes really foster a good learning environment, b/c of this 'tight knit' group. Second, i think the blend of self directed learning into classical lecture styel learning is good for me. That is, while I think I would enjoy engaging in self directed learning, and I feel that I would learn a great deal from it (and may even be good at it), I would rather not goto a school where the primary method of learning is completely PBL (i.e. Mac....im not knocking Mac at all, it just may not be for me). Lastly, i've read that the school teaches in blocks...so that you basically all there is to learn about a certain system, and then are tested on that....i think this helps me learn b/c of everything is basically fresh, and you can really understand the practical sense of each system (rather than learnign a bit, and having to fit that into a bigger picture 5 months down the road).

Now, my question is, are there any other things taht UWO may offer that make it a unique medical school? Somethign that would make an applicatn choose it over another school?

I was thinking about the city itself.....being from Saskatoon, I definately dont want to move to a really big city...i love the size of S'toon....and while i realize that London is a bit bigger (400, 000 compared to 250, 000), the general lifestyle seems to be similar...which is a definate attraction for me.....

Are there any changes to the curriculum that could be occurring in the next year or few years? Anything that the school may need to improve on?

<pagetext>I'm just interested in finding out what choices you have for the "back to the basics" portion of 4th year?? Research or courses? Is there a list of optional classes??

thanks

<title>Engineering and Medicine</title>

<pagetext>I was wondering if those of you in meds at Western know anything about the feasibility of Western's Engineering and Medicine concurrent degree program. Are there people in your classes who are in the program? Is first year Medicine doable when combined with an Engineering project course?

Thanks,

Ror

<title>Aboriginal (traditional) medicine vs. "Western" me</title>

<pagetext>hey everybody, I was wondering if anyone knew of any good places to find info comparing/constrasting aboriginal vs. western (and i don't mean UWO; i mean industrialized nations ;) ) medicine?

... or more to the point, how would us "westerners" treat an aboriginal patient differently, depending on their value systems... are there any blatant conflicts, analogous to the J.W. / blood transfusion scenario?

thanks!!!!

<title>Case-based situation?!</title>

<pagetext>Hi,

I'm going in next week for my interview and I want to ask all the people that went in last weekend what your interview questions were like? What type of situational questions did they ask? Did you have examples from your experiences to come up with an answer? Could you give a proper answer or were most of them open-ended questions...with no real answer?

<title>Two different types of Interviews</title>

<pagetext>Hey all,

A big weekend coming up for me. Western on saturday, toronto on sunday. I find these two interviews to be quite different in their dynamic...e.g. close file vs. open file, toronto's supposed emphasis on ethics. Any suggestions to how differently I should approach these two. i.e. is there any major change in frame of mind that I need to put in place after my western interview and before the toronto one??
