U of T third yr and higher courses

Recommended Posts

I am currently going into 4th Honours at Western . All 200 level and up are considered senior courses. Western also states that 200 level is considered the equivalent to 3rd yr at other universities and accepts 300 level and 400 level to be the same. Therefore in my 4th year I am doing the majority of 300 level courses. This is also because of the customized dual major that I am doing which limits many of my choices. Checked with Western and this is fine since they consider 300 and 400 equivalent.

However U of T states that one must be doing 60% of course load according to the year they are in. Does this mean that I would have to do 60 % of my 4 th year at 400 level for U of T although Western considers the rigour of their 300 level to be the equivalent to a 400 level course .

Can anyone clarify this? Thanks

Hello,

I don't think that it should be too much of a concern, per se, as I think that the upper year course requirement seeks to find people who do not take a coherent program of study or purposely take lower year courses. Since these courses are required for your program, then it should be fine.

I think what is important is that you explain your reasons for embarking on the academic path that you did in your essay, which is also one of the requirements of the essay.

Good luck!

Hey, You're right that at UofT the majority of your courses should be from your year, but this applies only until third year. There are plenty of double majors which wouldn't allow majority 400 courses in 4th year. I did a specialist at U of T and still didn't have majority 400 courses in my final year.

In fact, the 60% mark isn't even met for many program requirements. For example, from an 05-06 calendar (its all I have at hand, physiology specialist (random)): Fourth year is just two full-course equivalents from PSL 400 series.

That would make 40% of the average students load. Its the same for a botany specialist.

So this shouldn't be any problem. I wouldn't worry about it.
