Wishfulthinker
I am new on this board so I don't really know the routine down pat, anyway I was just wandering about neonatal as a specialty I have always been interested in it. I was wandering if it is a very competitive specialty? where the best programs are for this certain specialty in Canada? How many years it requires in residency? If anyone knows anything that would be great.
Ollie
Hi, There isn't really a "neonatal surgery" specialty that I am aware of. Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics but it sounds like you are more interested in a surgical specialty. Any pediatric surgeon would be a subspecialist of their respective surgical specialty, for example, pediatric general surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery. I have no idea if people sub-subspecialize in neonatal surgery. My guess would be no as there would likely not be enough volume to support someone who exclusively sees neonates. In terms of the best centres for peds surgery, I'm not sure but I would guess it would be in the cities with the biggest volumes (Sick Kids, CHEO, BC Children's Hospital). Hope that's helpful!
