Subspecialty or GIM?

Hi there,

This might be a dumb question....but if you are looking to match to a particular site for IM, what kind of an elective should you set up at that site? Subspecialty medicine? or Team GIM? Does it matter?

Anyways, thanks for the help :)

Hi there,

Typically, Team GIM is a more challenging rotation experience than subspecialty IM given the nature and intensity of the work that you do within the rotation. (There are certainly exceptions to this.) Therefore, Team GIM can be a bit more trying and is one of those rotations where you can either shine or, less fortunately, not. If you do well in the rotation and can receive a good letter of reference, then that letter can be an asset when applying to programs given the universal understanding that Team GIM can be a bit of a bugbear rotation. All that being said, if there's a specialty rotation that you quite fancy, or a staff member with whom you'd really like to work (in subspecialty medicine) then that would be a valuable rotation too, as long as you can get yourself a good reference letter by the end of the rotation to attest to your strong performance.

One piece of advice that is valuable for either type of rotation: try to ascertain who the good staff are within either type of rotation (ask current residents, or see who's won teaching awards, for example). The staff member can make or break any rotation for you and if you do opt for a tough rotation like Team GIM, that can make quite a big difference for you in many ways. To wit: a good staff member will be a pleasure to work with, may provide a great teaching experience, may warm you further to wishing to head to that program for residency and may provide you with a strong letter. A not-so-great staff member can unfortunately have the opposite effect on all of those fronts.

Cheers,

Kirsteen
