Guest CLYL
Could any current UT med students provide some info. on electives available to pre-clerkship med students? I was trying to look it up on UT's website but it seems as if only 3rd/4th year students get electives. Also, could these pre-clerkship electives be done at other universities (ie. McGill or UBC)? Any insight is greatly appreciated!
Guest cheech10
Officially, electives are clerkship options (and I think this is the case at all schools - "precelerkship electives" or whatever anyone wants to call them are not equivalent / are not noted on your transcript), although every school allows students to participate in a variety of clinical experiences during preclerkship. There are a number of opportunities for UofT students as well. You can arrange these experiences on your own through physicians that you know or other personal contacts, or you can talk to your academy office to set one up through them (the academy offices tend to have quite good resources). First year at UofT tends to be a little hectic at times, but many people did organize clinical experiences during the year. There is a lot more time available in second year for this sort of thing, as well as during your summer breaks. Pre-clerkship activities can of course be done at any university, as long as the department wishes to have you; you are still covered by your home school's liability coverage, but the school you visit may need a letter from the faculty stating this.
