Edmonton Residents! Question about apt hunting

Recommended Posts

Always be looking. There's a bit of everything - some leases in July 1, some in Aug 1, some month to month. The thing is once a posting is up, it's usually gone within 1-2 days. Listings can be up as early as right now, and some will be on July 31. Some listings are better than others - it depends on luck of the draw and which one you pick.

Try craigslist for listings, and if you are in Edmonton or know of anyone, looking at bulletins or at online student housing info (http://www.rentingspaces.ca/search.htm?ref=2) can help. And for multiunit residences right beside campus & the hospital such as Newton (http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/residences/nav01.cfm?nav01=23122) and Windsor Park (http://www.westcorp.net/p_res_windsor_lofts/index.html), you should put yourself on waiting lists now, as they are months to a year long.

I agree with the previous post - It is all quite variable. From my past experience, you will find the most renting opportunities in the month before the rental start date (ie. everything will be posted in July for an Aug 1 possession, you just need to act fast).

Other good rental sites:

http://www.rentfaster.com

google: rentex (the company I go through, they have alot of buildings and are good managers, though they are nuts)

Also, on the UofA website:

Is a good one too. Through the Student union.

Stadium area isn't one of the nicest areas, it can be hit or miss (some rough areas, some not so bad). Esp in terms of renting, I'd pass personally.

Downtown, Oliver, and Garneau/University area would get my vote. Nice areas and good access to school, but they are also some of the more expensive in terms of renting because of those features.

Like Brendan mentioned, Stadium is hit and miss. Technically speaking, it is in one of the lower socioeconomic areas, but even so there are 'safer' and 'slummier' areas.

The only pro is that you will be relatively close to an LRT station which can take you straight to health sciences which is across the street from the (current) lecture theatre.

Thanks guys for all the insight. I dunno why my friend told me that Stadium area is nice, lol. Going to have a chat with her about that one...

So what are the nicer areas that I should be looking at?

Are there any nice areas along the LRT line or are they only located around the campus?

Every time I go to stadium I swear I'm going to get stabbed.

Icebox has suggested 2 of the best locations IMO. Windsor is pricey but nice and Newton is good too.

You really can't go wrong living anywhere near campus. The LRT is literally (well, maybe not) 50 feet away from the classroom and the LRT is so embarassingly short in Edmonton that no train ride will feel too long. There's a train being built (and almost completed) just south of campus on 76th Ave and there's a ton of bus access downtown. Plus there's a mandatory U-Pass so after you pay a relatively small fee (compared to how much a bus pass WOULD cost) you get free public transit while you're a student.

My plan is to put myself on the Windsor Park Plaza waitlist in April and also start house hunting. I like living close to campus so anywhere from 70th AVE and north (campus is on 87th) is prety close especially with the incoming LRT stop on 76th

  • 5 weeks later...

You should look a month or two in advance if possible.

There is a direct bus from Westmount and Kingsway. Westmount, IIRC, is the nicer neighbourhood.

McKernan has alot of student rentals and is walking/biking/bus distance.

Also, if you have pets, Garneau towers is expensive but basically right on campus.
