generally speaking a stipend is pay money for you. You spend it on w/e you want to. If you get scholarships sometimes they have a set amount set aside for lab work. for example the cihr doct scholarship is 30K/year with an additional 5k for lab supplies (if u buy them) or travel to conferences and stuff.

 

but if you're prof says you ahve a stipend of w/e, they mean that you get paid that much
