Hello,,,

AS you said, I made my question specific...

Orthodontist vs Orthopaedist vs. Engineer.

P.S. compare the salary when same hours, after residency.

Thanks...

Well I think you need to make this even more specific...what do you mean by engineer? A civil engineer? A chemical engineer? A Waterloo computer engineering graduate? An MIT one?

Engineering is a very wide discipline...quantifying an engineer's salary is the same as asking a doctor's salary..you need to specify the degree and area of expertise.

Still too general.

Perhaps you've not reached this stage of your education yet, but you'll soon discover that all three fields above have subspecialties of their own.

Like MEDCOMPSCI already mentioned, there's many different types of engineers. Similarly, there are orthopedic surgeons that do nothing but knee joints, others that specialise in spinal surgery, etc, etc. I assume the same applies for orthodontists, about which I know relatively little as it's a dental specialty. For both doctors and dentists, you then have to realise that different age groups have different diseases. Therefore, you could be a orthopedic surgeon that specialises in kids, and their pay would be different than one who specialises in sports injuries and is affliated with an athletic team.

Go one step further, and you will discover that where you live also affects what money you make. If you go to the US, you make more money. In a large city, if you accumulate a large practice, you can make tons of money, but then you also have to pay your staff much more money, and things like rent cost a heck of a lot more in downtown or suburban Toronto than they would in rural Ontario. Et cetera, et cetera.

As a result, we can't give you an answer to that question without writing out some 100 pages of text (and that's just not gonna happen!). I suggest that you do some internet searches and check out the links mentioned in the last thread, and do some research on your own. I can't do this homework for you because I don't know anything about you or your situation.

Salaries in Canada would go like orthodontist > orthapedic > engineer. Work hours in Canada are probably ranked orthapedic > engineer > orthodontist. I know a close family friend who is an orthapedic surgeon in BC and he makes good money (not excatly sure how much but the level is still capped by the government). I know the two orthodontists in my home town have the two largest, nicest homes in town excluding my former ENT doctor who I saw when I was younger (drove a Ferrari, house w/pool/tennis courts, moved to the US about 10 years ago for more money, opportunity).

In the US however, engineers can make a lot more money, orthapedic surgeons aren't capped and don't bill through BC medical and can make a lot and orthodontists can make anywhere from 200-800K+ a year.

Do what suits you not what makes money. I grew up with two family docs as my parents and now I'm in dental school (go figure). Besides, there are lots of easier ways to make 6 or 7 figure salaries than med or dent.
